Editorial policy and corrections

How we decide what's true enough to publish, how we date it, and what happens when we get it wrong.

Sources come first

Our guides and news stories link factual claims to numbered sources at the bottom of the page. We prefer primary documents in this order:

  1. Statutes, bills and court records (California Legislative Information, the Federal Register, court opinions).
  2. Government agencies: the County of San Diego, the California Department of Public Health, the FDA, the CDC.
  3. Peer-reviewed research and registered trial records on ClinicalTrials.gov.
  4. University and institutional announcements, such as UC San Diego's.
  5. Established local and national news organizations.

When a claim rests on a company press release or a preprint that hasn't been peer-reviewed, we say so in the sentence, and we aim to do the same for claims that rest on a single news report. When sources disagree (for example, the FDA and CDC counted deaths differently in the 2024 Diamond Shruumz outbreak), we report both numbers rather than pick one.

Every page is dated

Guides show the date they were last checked against their sources. Psilocybin law and research change quickly, so we re-check the legal guide when a bill moves, the FDA acts or a court rules. News stories show their publication date and, if updated, the date and nature of the update.

Safety rules we don't break

Independence and disclosure

Mushrooms San Diego is owned by the team behind My Mushroom Dispensary, an online psilocybin retailer. We disclose that on our About page and next to any mention of it. We don't accept payment for coverage, sell ads or use affiliate links.

How we use AI tools

We use software, including AI research and writing tools, to help gather sources and draft pages. We check factual claims against their sources before publishing and say when we couldn't confirm something. The illustrations on this site are made with AI image tools and are labeled as illustrations; they aren't photographs of real places or events.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, email editors@mushroomssandiego.com with the page and what's wrong. We fix factual errors as soon as we confirm them and note substantive corrections at the bottom of the page, with the date.
